Rhinitis/Bronchopneumonia Syndrome in Irish Wolfhounds

Abstract: This study describes the clinical, immunologic, genetic, and pathologic features of Irish Wolfhounds with rhinitis/bronchopneumonia syndrome. The dogs examined were from Belgium, The Netherlands, UK, Canada, Germany, and Switzerland. Signs included transient to persistent mucoid or mucopurulent rhinorrhea, cough, and respiratory dyspnea. Radiographic, rhinoscopic, and bronchoscopic findings were variable. Analysis of ciliary ultrastructure was performed in 5 affected dogs, but no characteristic primary ciliary… Show more

“…2,57 Similarly, an increased incidence of hydrocephalus has been associated with primary ciliary dyskinesia in certain dog breeds. 20,22,29,80 The mechanical function of ependymal flow would be most important in narrow passageways, therefore making the cerebral aqueduct a critical location for an intact and functional ependymal lining. Obstruction of the aqueduct would be more likely during embryonic development, when the physical size of the lumen is small.…”

“…These authors conclude that GDV may be partly mediated through the inheritance of a particular body shape (deep chest) or tempera- Neither figures on incidence nor on prevalence in Irish Wolfhounds are available in the literature. In the most extensive study (16), all described cases (n=28) belonged to six bloodlines that all shared common ancestors, suggesting that this disorder could have a genetic background. According to (12), the mode of inheritance may follow a simple autosomal recessive pattern.…”

“…The best known predisposed respiratory disease is rhinitis/bronchopneumonia syndrome, where a chronic rhinitis is the primary disease process while bronchopneumonia develops secondarily, with the disease typically occurring in young dogs and often being present from birth (Clercx et al . , Wilkinson ). Immunodeficiency was proposed as the cause of the rhinitis/bronchopneumonia syndrome in three related dogs in one study (Leisewitz et al .…”
