“…Antibiotic treatment is effective but must be prolonged [12,14]. Person-toperson transmission of KR probably occurs via airborne secretions [15]. However, healthy individuals in contact with a patient for many years do not necessarily develop infection [16].…”

“…K. rhinoscleromatis (Klebsiella tribe III) is an opportunistic, gram‐negative diplobacillus of the family Enterobacteriaceae which, along with K. ozena, represents a biochemically inactive strain of K. pneumoniae . 10–12 Our observations show that, either in culture or in vivo, KR exhibits a complex capsule covered by fimbriae. Fimbriae are responsible for the microorganism's ability to adhere to host cells and, consequently, were scant in cultured Klebsiella and conspicuous in tissue bacteria.…”

“…12 With only one exception, the capsular polysaccharides of all Klebsiella serotype III have been found to be of a similar composition, 12–14 and in K. pneumoniae, they have been shown to enable the organism to resist phagocytosis and the bactericidal power of normal serum. 11,12 Because KR has a close biochemical relationship with this strain, it likely shares similar defensive and toxic properties which determine its resistance.…”
