Rhizogenic agrobacteria in hydroponic crops: epidemics, diagnostics and control

Abstract: Rhizogenic Agrobacterium biovar 1, harbouring an Ri‐plasmid (root‐inducing plasmid), is the causative agent of hairy root disease (HRD) in the hydroponic cultivation of tomato, cucumber and aubergine. The disease is characterized by extensive root proliferation leading to strong vegetative growth and, in severe cases, substantial losses in marketable yield. Agrobacterium biovar 1 is a heterogeneous group of agrobacteria and includes at least 10 genomospecies, among which at least four (G1, G3, G8 and G9) have … Show more

“…To confirm this hypothesis, further studies with genomic sequencing should be performed. Bacteria belonging to G3, to our knowledge, have not been reported to cause crown gall but have been reported to be the causal agents of crazy root disease (Bosmans et al, 2015(Bosmans et al, , 2017.…”

“…This disease infects dicotyledons and was first described as a soilborne disease in apples (Riker et al, 1930) at the beginning of the twentieth century. In recent years, crazy roots have been noted mainly in tomatoes and cucumbers but have also been found in melons and aubergines in the United Kingdom, France (Weller et al, 2000), New Zealand, Greece, Japan (Sawada & Azegami, 2014), Russia (Ignatov et al, 2016) and Belgium (Bosmans et al, 2015(Bosmans et al, , 2017.…”

“…Rhizogenic Agrobacterium biovar 1 is the causal agent of hairy root disease (HRD), which affects many hydroponically-grown crops, including tomato, cucumber, eggplant, and bell pepper [1][2][3]. Application of hydrogen peroxide is currently the most used management strategy to reduce HRD.…”
