Rhizome development of Phragmites australis in a reed community

Abstract: Variations in the height, shoot density, biomasses of above-and below-ground parts and rhizome distributions of Phragrnites australis were investigated along a line-transect in a reed community at Yufutsu Mire, Hokkaido. Relationships of performance of the reed plants to soil conditions and species compositions were also examined.Three types of rhizome development were recognized in reed plants; (1) the central part of the reed community, characterized by well developed rhizomes and dense aerial shoots, (2) th… Show more

“…These authors found root biomass to be relatively stable throughout the growing season. The vertical distribution of aboveground and belowground reed biomass was studied by Kudo and Ito (1988), and that of the aboveground biomass was recorded throughout the growing season by Kvet et al (1969), Dykyjová et al (1970) and Dykyjová and Hradecká (1976).…”

Besides, different stem and rhizome types were distinguished by Haslam (1969Haslam ( , 1972, Kudo and Ito (1988), and 'aerial rhizomes' were described by Pohl (1985). Rhizome architecture and age structure were studied by Kudo and Ito (1988), Cizková and Lukavska (1999), and Klimes (2000).…”
