Riboflavin–UV-A Crosslinking for Fixation of Biosynthetic Corneal Collagen Implants

Abstract: Riboflavin-UV-A crosslinking as a fixation method for biosynthetic corneal collagen implants was demonstrated to be promising. It can reduce suture-related complications such as haze formation and surface irregularity. Stability of the implants, especially shrinkage after riboflavin-UV-A crosslinking, needs to be further evaluated. Biostability, integration, and long-term outcome are further evaluated in in vivo animal experiments.

“…Other photo-dependent mechanisms rely on different mechanisms, such as photo-oxidation, which crosslinks the side chain groups of the amino acids [165][166][167]. Or with flavin-mononucleotide that have similar applications with proteins, such as collagen [168], and keratin [169], or with more heterogeneous matrices, such as the amniotic membrane [170], corneal implants [171], and decellularized human arterial small-diameter vascular grafts [172]. Or vitamin B2-induced photocrosslinking with ultraviolet light [173,174].…”
