Ribonuclease activity of Petunia inflata S proteins is essential for rejection of self-pollen.

Abstract: S proteins, pistil-specific ribonucleases that cosegregate with S alleles, have previously been shown to control rejection of self-pollen in Petunia inflata and Nicotiana alata, two solanaceous species that display gametophytic self-incompatibility. The ribonuclease activity of S proteins was thought to degrade RNA of self-pollen tubes, resulting in the arrest of their growth in the style. However, to date no direct evidence has been obtained. Here, the ribonuclease activity of S3 protein of P. inflata was abo… Show more

“…That S C2 -haplotype is defective in the pollen function of S 17 -haplotype was further confirmed by the characterization of S C2 -RNase and S 17 -RNase and subsequent cloning and sequencing of their cDNAs. The sequences of these two S-RNases are completely identical, and both have normal RNase activity, which is required for rejection of self-pollen during the SI response (Huang et al, 1994).…”

“…Haploid pollen carrying an S-haplotype identical to one of two S-haplotypes carried by the diploid pistil is recognized as self-pollen and is rejected. The S-RNase gene controls female specificity at the S-locus, and RNase activity is essential for the SI response (Huang et al, 1994). It is generally accepted that SRNases act to degrade RNA of self-pollen tubes resulting in the inhibition of fertilization, but many details of the mechanism are unknown.…”
