Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is the most important staple food in the world including Asia and Pacific. Millions of people around the world depend on rice due to the high calories and economic returns it provides. More than 100 species of insects including 20 economic pests are capable of causing notable damage to rice plants. Insect pests continue to pose threat to rice farming since rice plants serve as their host plants. Pests are major constraints to rice production and coexist with rice growth. Information on pest economic importance, description, biology, distribution, economic threshold level, population dynamics, monitoring and forecasting is a prerequisite. This review is focused on brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens Stål) which is an important economic rice pest that are prevalent in tropical rice growing regions. Brown planthopper (BPH) is a serious pest of rice and has tremendous impact especially in Asia-Pacific region. Understanding the biology and ecology of this pest will enhance the designing, formulation and utilization of effective control measures. The control strategies as stipulated by integrated pest management (IPM) should be eco-friendly with minimum use of synthetic pesticides while boosting the activities of natural enemies and other biological control agents. The control measures discussed in this paper are oriented towards the cultural and biological aspects of managing the pest.

Tikus sawah (Rattus argentiventer) merupakan hama utama penyebab kerusakan dan kehilangan hasil tanaman padi di Indonesia. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui efektivitas perangkap sistem bubu linier dan perangkap bambu untuk mengendalikan tikus yang dipasang pada 3 zona habitat yang berbeda. Pengendalian hama tikus dengan sistem perangkap bubu linier dan perangkap bambu dilakukan di Kecamatan Mattiro Sompe, Kabupaten Pinrang. Percobaan dilaksanakann dalam bentuk percobaan faktorial yang disusun dalam RAK dengan tiga perlakuan. Pengambilan data dilakukan pada tiga zona habitat tikus yaitu pada daerah sekitar perkampungan, perkebunan, dan daerah sekitar tanggul irigasi. Semua zona tikus ini berbatasan dengan sawah. Perlakuan terdiri dari atas perangkap bubu linier, Perangkap bambu, dan kontrol yakni petak sawah tanpa pemasangan perangkap. Setiap perangkap perlakuan diulang dua kali. Perangkap bubu linier terdiri atas pagar plastik, tinggi 50 cm dan panjang 600 m, dipasang mengelilingi petak-petak sawah sebagai unit percobaan. Bubu terbuat dari ram kawat berukuran 25 x 25 x 60 cm. Pemasangan bubu dilakukan setiap jarak 20 m, dalam penelitian ini dipasang 72 buah bubu. Berdasarkan zona tangkapan rata-rata populasi tikus yang terperangkap tertinggi terdapat pada zona irigasi yaitu 23.75 ekor. Berdasarkan zona tangkapan rata-rata intensitas serangan tertinggi terdapat pada zona perkampungan yaitu 6.39%. Berdasarkan zona tangkapan rata-rata produksi tertinggi terdapat pada zona irigasi yaitu 11.07 ton/ha.

Insecticidal control of insect pests of rice crop may influence the environment and nontarget species in rice fields. Aedes albopictus, one of the most common nontarget species present in rice fields, received lethal and sublethal exposures to insecticides used in rice cultivated fields. The present work explores the effects of insecticides in six non-targeted Ae. albopictus strains collected from rice fields with a history of insecticidal usage in comparison with a laboratory susceptible reference strain (REF) and a strain (LHR) collected from a rice field with no, or minimal, history of insecticidal usage. Two types of effects, the resistance development and performance of biological traits, were studied by selecting seven commonly used insecticides in rice fields in Punjab, Pakistan. The results revealed that the strains collected from the rice fields with histories of insecticidal usage exhibited significant levels of resistance to flonicamid, chlorantraniliprole, gamma-cyhalothrin, fipronil, monomehypo, triazophos, and carbofuran, when compared with REF and LHR strains. In addition, Ae. albopictus strains revealed a significantly weaker performance of biological traits (rate of pupae formation, survival of male and female adults (except females of OKR and MTN strains), and ovipositing females) than those of the REF and LHR strains. However, the fecundity of all field strains was only significantly different with that of the REF strain. In conclusion, the results highlight the problem of the negative effects of insecticidal usage in rice fields on nontarget species present in the same environment, and emphasize the need to adopt pest management activities that are safe for the environment.
