Rice Pest Management and Biological Control

Abstract: Insect pests and disease infestations are the primary constraints in rice (Oryza sativa) production systems. The rice stem borer and brown plant hopper have the largest share. Concerns about the sustainability of conventional agriculture have prompted widespread introduction of integrated pest management, an ecologicallybased approach to control of harmful insects and pests. Integrated pest management is intended to reduce ecological and health damage from chemical pesticides by using natural parasites and pre… Show more

“…IPM promotes the biodiversity of natural enemies in rice fields as they are the key component to success in biological control of pests [14,15]. The use of chemical insecticides, especially in the early crop season disrupts natural enemy activity therefore it has been recommended to minimize their applications [16]. IPM may not have a distinct definition, but it discourages the indiscriminate use of chemical pesticides and promotes biological techniques that use natural parasites and predators to control pests [17].…”

“…Menurunkan produksi komoditas beras dapat berdampak buruk terhadap negara-negara penghasil beras. Masalah yang dihadapi oleh semua negara penghasil beras di dunia adalah hama serangga dan penyakit tanaman yang dianggap sebagai faktor utama dalam berkontribusi terhadap penurunan produksi padi (Fahad et al 2015).…”

“…albopictus might be exposed to insecticide residues through, drift, leaching, runoff and/or respiration in the contaminated air. Exposure of non-target species to insecticide residues in rice ecosystems increase the likelihood of resistance development to insecticides and negative effects on their biological traits ( Fahad et al, 2015 ; Khan, 2020b ).…”
