Rill and gully erosion risk of lateritic terrain in South-Western Birbhum District, West Bengal, India

Abstract: It is a known fact that no part of the earth surface is free from threat. It applies to Birbhum District, West Bengal, Indian Lateritic Terrain also. The existing terrain is characterized by mainly climatogenetic processes. Though the impact of climate change is vital in the shaping of the lesser topographies in the study-area. The study-area is characterized by micro landforms e. g. rills, gullies, water falls, terraces, gorges type features and limestone topographic type features. The denudational processes a… Show more

“…High seasonal variability of rainfall (Coefficient of variation = 98.04 %) encourage strong wetting and drying of soil and it often causes vulnerability of soil loss. Apart from all these, strong riling and gulling is another major vector of strong rate vulnerability of soil loss specifically in upper part of the rill and gully heads and in fat, these areas contribute more soil erosion (Kar and Bandopadhyay 1974;Bandopadhyay 1987;Jha and Kapat 2009).…”

“…Certainly, this fact is not solely responsible for deteriorating forest quality. Coarse grain lateritite soil (Chokraborty, 1970), and mass scale soil erosion (6-8t/ha/y) are another controlling factors for tree felling and degradation of vegetation (Jha and Kapat, 2009;Pal, 2016). The formation of dust layer on plant body damage plant tissue which reduces rate of photosynthesis.…”

“…Transported secondary laterites and lateritic alluvium soils are found at the middle part of the basin (Chakraborty, 1970). These lateriatic regolith is carried out by the main river and tributary system (Jha, 1997;Jha and Kapat, 2003;Jha and Kapat, 2009). These lateritic mater Fine silty alluvium soil is found at the lower catchment of the basin.…”

“…As the important studies done by Ahmad (1968Ahmad ( , 1973, Sharma (1970Sharma ( , 1980Sharma ( , 1986Sharma ( , 2009), Singh and Agnihotri (1987), Kale et al (1994), Singh and Dubey (2002), S. Bandhyopadhyay et al (1995Bandhyopadhyay et al ( , 2004, Jha and Kapat (2003, 2009, 2011) the gullies and ravines of India are generated in different types of soils through various stages under the influence of various factors (viz. neo-tectonic causes in peninsular margin of India, rejuvenation due to Quaternary climate change, land use and land cover change etc.).…”
