Ring maps for spatial visualization of multivariate epidemiological data

Abstract: Epidemiological research often involves the visual exploration of numerous attributes to help discern patterns between health and characteristics of the physical, socioeconomic, or built environment. Unfortunately, many of the multivariate mapping techniques discussed throughout the cartographic literature can be challenging to create or interpret -particularly for individuals without a cartographic background. In this paper, we present a new style of multivariate map -the ring map -to aid in basic visualizati… Show more

“…Other labeling techniques such as dynamic programming (S5.4), meta‐heuristic (S5.5), matchings (S5.6) and sweep‐line algorithms (S5.7) are rarely used. Fekete and Plaisaint [FP99], Battersby et al [BSF∗11] Kindermann et al [KLW14], and Götzelmann et al [GHS06b] used highly specialized algorithms that do not match any of the listed techniques; details are given in Section 4.1.2.…”

“…Battersby et al [BSF∗11] proposed ring maps considering a circle as contours. Uniform labels are evenly distributed around the circle such that each label is oriented with the ray that emanates from the center of the circle and goes through the center of the label.…”

“…For instance, Karlsson et al 2013have explored donut charts as a means to depict how a particular aspect is distributed across different age categories, and heat map diagrams as a variant of the above mentioned temporal strips. Battersby et al (2011) have explored the use of ensembles of squares, the colours of which represent several aspects of an epidemic, similar to heat map diagrams of one (nominal) dimension. These ensembles, in turn, were positioned in a circle around and linked to a choropleth map.…”
