Ring‐opening metathesis polymerization of a modified linseed oil with varying levels of crosslinking

Abstract: A commercial norbornyl-functionalized linseed oil, blended with a bicyclic norbornene-based crosslinking agent (at loadings ranging from 0 to 50 wt %) undergoes ring-opening metathesis polymerization with the 1st generation Grubbs' catalyst to form a biorenewable polymer network. Comonomers are characterized, the thermal and mechanical properties of the cured systems are investigated by dynamic mechanical analysis, and thermal decomposition is evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis. The resin is shown to cons… Show more

“…19 Dilulin appears to be a 95:5 mixture of the modified oil, possessing an average of one bicyclic moiety per triglyceride, and DCPD oligomers 6b. We have reported the ROMP of Dilulin with DCPD (Figure 2) and other strained crosslinkers20 to produce unique thermosetting resins. Utilizing DCPD, soft and flexible resins have been prepared, with sample flexibility increasing as the Dilulin content increased from 50 up to 100 wt.‐% oil 6b.…”

“…A representative structure for the oil fraction of Dilulin is shown in Scheme 9. Unique Dilulin-based thermosetting resins have been successfully synthesized using DCPD [108] or other polycyclic norbornene-based co-monomers (Scheme 9) [109] as cross-linkers. The ROMP of pure Dilulin itself affords a soft and flexible rubber with T g = À29 8C.…”

“…Olefin metathesis is known to be a very useful tool for the synthesis of a variety of polymers via ring opening metathesis polymerization33 (ROMP) as well as acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization 34. In the case of ROMP, Larock et al developed a variety of thermosets from a norbornene‐functionalized castor‐oil derivative, as well as from norbornene‐functionalized linseed oil (commercially available from Cargill) 35–37. However, all further discussions of this contribution will focus on non‐cross‐linked systems obtained from plant‐oil derivatives via olefin metathesis.…”
