Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Selected Marine Fish Species of Gadani Shipbreaking Area and Pakistan

Abstract: Gadani shipbreaking area, located on the coastline of Pakistan, is an important fish production area. In this study, levels of four metals (Ni, Pb, Cd, and Mn) in 148 muscle and gill samples of seven fish species (Small-scale terapon, Torpedo scade, Sicklefish, Saddle grunt, Gold silk seabream, Indian mackerel, Spotted sickle fish) and seawater samples, taken from 9 sampling sites in the shipbreaking area, were determined. In addition, multiple approaches were used to assess human health risks from fish consum… Show more

“…Recently, health risk assessment through PHE contamination in food has been observed as one of the most significant environmental issues [26][27][28]. Health risk assessment of aquatic food has shown a remarkable increasing trend globally, especially in the third-world developing countries such as Bangladesh [18], Pakistan [29], and Vietnam [30]. PHE contamination and potential health risks have been observed in the fish collected from the Hunza River, northern Pakistan [7], located in the vicinity of the present study.…”

“…Metal concentrations in fish species meat are higher than (RDA) limits, effect a major health risk to both fish and humans. Kakar et al, 2020 studied that The Gadani shipbreaking area, on Pakistan's coast, is a major fish production location. Heavy metal concentrations in eatable muscle tissues of all examined fish species from the Gadani seaside were found to be safe for human consumption after comparison to maximum allowed limits.…”
