Risk factors and morbidity in patients with placenta previa accreta compared to placenta previa non-accreta

Abstract: In the presence of a previous history of CS, patients with antepartum diagnosis of placenta previa are considered to be at a greater risk for having placenta accreta. The risk increases with the increase in the number of previous CS. Patients with placenta previa accreta have a significantly higher incidence of PPH and are more likely to undergo emergency hysterectomy.

“…This association did not change even after adjustment for various confounding factors. The overall rate of hysterectomies in our study was 3.96%, which is lower compared to the results of other studies [3,11]. Most of the hysterectomies occurred in women with placenta accreta.…”

“…So far, the only factor that was found to significantly increase the risk of placenta accreta development in women with PP was a history of previous cesarean section. Women with PP and 3 or more cesarean sections had more than 60% chance for the development of PP [11]. The connection of different types of PP and placenta accreta was for the first time described in the literature by Gorodeski and Bahari who found connection of marginal PP with placenta accreta with focal accretion [4].…”

“…The association between placenta previa and placenta accreta is widely documented [19][20][21] . Most cases of placenta accreta are associated with placenta previa, especially in patients with a previous uterine scar [19][20][21] .…”

“…With a sizable proportion of childbearing women in our society being grandmultiparae, the risks of repeat caesarean section especially placenta praevia accreta increases. It was shown by Zaki et al (1998) that the incidence of emergency hysterectomy in cases of placenta praevia accreta was 50% compared to 2% in non-accreta. It will therefore seem reasonable to attempt to reduce the trend of caesarean section for breeches in our community.…”
