Risk factors and survival outcomes in patients with brain metastases from breast cancer

Abstract: Development of central nervous system (CNS) metastases in breast cancer (BC) is associated with poor prognosis. The incidence of CNS metastases in metastatic BC is reported to be about 10-16 %, but different subtypes of BC are associated with different risk of developing CNS metastases. We retrospectively analysed the risk of CNS metastases and the outcome in a cohort of 473 patients with metastatic BC. CNS metastases were diagnosed in 15.6 % of patients and median survival from diagnosis of CNS metastases was… Show more

“…The median age at breast cancer diagnosis in our cohort was 51.65 years. We observed a higher incidence of HER2 overexpression with 45% of cases being positive for HER2 compared with the 20% incidence of HER2 positivity seen in all patients with breast cancer, this is in agreement with previous reports which have analyzed HER2 as a risk factor for the development of BM [18,19]. In a similar way, we also observed a lower incidence of luminal A tumors with only 25% of cases, and a 30% incidence of triple-negative disease.…”

“…Most breast cancer studies have focused on the prognostic factors of survival from diagnosis or metastasis time to death (Yamasaki et al, 1992;Selzner et al, 2000;Nieder et al, 2008;Morris et al, 2012;Minisini et al, 2013). Risk factors of metastasis are routinely determined by using log-rank test or stratified analysis and survival analysis is used for modeling the overall survivorship.…”
