Risk factors associated with renal insufficiency in horses with primary gastrointestinal disease: 26 cases (2000–2003)

Abstract: In colic- or colitis-affected horses, factors associated with renal insufficiency included gastric reflux, abnormal rectal examination findings, or hypochloremia initially; prognosis for horses in which azotemia resolves within 72 hours of treatment appears to be better than for horses with persistent azotemia.

“…In particular, an increase of 1 unit of creatinine concentration was associated with a five-fold increased probability of death, with the best specificity at >2.16 mg/dL in the ROC curve analysis performed to predict mortality upon admission. Creatinine represents an indicator of the glomerular filtration rate and the increase in its concentration in colic horses may be related to reduced renal perfusion or acute kidney injury associated with colic events (Groover et al, 2006). This could be relevant for equine colic management and prognosis and should be elucidated in future studies.…”

“…Endotoxaemia and the serial events of the reduction of tissue perfusion, inflammation, disseminated intravascular coagulation and multiple organ dysfunction could be associated with a fatal outcome (Vandenplas et al, 2005;Groover et al, 2006;Cesarini et al, 2010). Many conditions causing equine colic can be responsible for the development of inflammation, leading to an acute phase response (APR).…”

“…Individual organ dysfunction has been reported in horses with acute gastrointestinal (GI) disease . Criteria for MODS in horses were proposed recently based on MODS criteria used in people, referred to herein as MODS EQ, but remain unvalidated .…”
