Risk factors for cervical presence of human papillomavirus DNA among women at risk for HIV infection

Abstract: Risk factors for cervical infection with human papillomavirus (HPV) were assessed among 236 Italian women at risk for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection (intravenous drug users (IVDU) or sexual partners of males at risk for HIV infection). All study participants underwent a structured interview, determination of HIV serostatus and detection of HPV cervical infection by means of polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Overall, the cervical presence of HPV DNA was ascertained in 86 of these 236 women (36.4%),… Show more

“…HPV DNA was detected using a nested PCR method, which has been shown previously to be significantly more sensitive for detection of all mucosal HPV genotypes (Tornesello et al, 2006). The HPV prevalence at baseline of 39.3 % in HIVpositive women was consistent with previous studies performed among HIV-infected Italian women participating in the multi-institutional DIANAIDS study Rezza et al, 1998). Overall, 20 HPV genotypes were identified, including 10 high-risk or probable high-risk viral types (types 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 45, 52, 53, 58 and 66), four of undetermined risk (types 55, 62, 83 and 84) and six low-risk viruses (types 6, 54, 61, 70, 72 and 81).…”

“…Alguns estudos têm evidenciado maior prevalência do HPV em pacientes infectados pelo HIV, ao mesmo tempo em que associam estas infecções às lesões precursoras do câncer cervical [8][9][10][11] . Esses estudos mostram diversas taxas de prevalência, de acordo com a população estudada, método de diagnóstico da lesão cervical e técnica empregada para avaliar a presença do HPV no trato anogenital 2,12,13 .…”

“…2 HPV prevalence depends largely on age and on sexual practices. [6][7][8] The prevalence of high risk HPV ranges from 11% in healthy women in Belgium, 9 20% in female university students in the United States 10 to 36% in Italian women at risk for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection 11 and 46% in Spanish women in prisons. 12 The highest prevalences of HPV have been described in female sex workers (FSWs) as they have multiple risk factors for HPV infection, such as young age and multiple sexual contacts.…”
