Risk Factors for Non-arteritic Anterior Ischaemic Optic Neuropathy in a Korean Population

Abstract: To determine the risk factors for non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION) in Korean patients, medical records from 45 Korean patients group and 45 healthy controls group were retrospectively reviewed. 10 NAION risk factors, including age, sex, associated systemic disease, past medical/social history, and fundus findings were analyzed. Significant risk factors for NAION in Korean patients were diabetes mellitus (odds ratio (OR) = 3.613, p = 0.020), hypercholesterolaemia (OR = 5.200, p = 0.001)… Show more

“…Twelve studies ( 10 , 11 , 13 , 26 , 41 , 47 , 50 , 51 , 54 56 , 59 ) researched the impact of current smoking status on NAION and found no significant association ( RR = 1.00, 95% CI : 0.72–1.39, P = 0.99) with slight heterogeneity ( I 2 = 46%, P = 0.03). In the subgroup analysis based on the ethnicities, results in all the three groups (Asian, European, and mixed) pointed out no significant association ( Figure 2C ).…”

“…In general, it was considered that mortality among current smokers would be up to 2 to 3 times as that among persons who never smoked [4]. As a highly modifiable environmental factor, smoking was reported to be associated with kinds of ocular disorders, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, ischemic optic neuropathy, and retinal vein occlusion [58]. With mounting evidence to suggest that tobacco smoking is a causative factor in ocular diseases, the question of the contribution of smoking to disease pathology also requires advanced examination.…”

“…We also could not conduct statistical comparisons between AAION and NAION in our Korean population, but the prevalence of AAION was much lower than that of NAION. Cardiovascular risk factors, a small optic disc, and obstructive sleep apnea have been strongly associated with NAION 343536. We therefore suggest that a further study involving a large population survey is needed to determine the genetic association and/or environment influences in AAION and/or NAION among different races.…”
