Risk factors for progressive visual field loss in primary open angle glaucoma

Abstract: Purpose The aim of this study was to evaluate routine ophthalmic data to identify clinically useful risk factors for progressive visual field loss in patients with primary openangle glaucoma (POAG) already receiving intraocular pressure-lowering treatments. Methods A retrospective cohort study design was used. Routine ophthalmic data for all subjects were obtained from case records with the knowledge that baseline clinical data had been collected in a standardised manner. Progression was defined according to t… Show more

“…The most important reason why studies did not meet the high quality criteria was their retrospective design (38.3% of studies reviewed). 10,[30][31][32]34,36,38,39,43,48,53,58,59,61,64,[66][67][68][69] In retrospective studies (historical cohorts), the information contained in the registries may be missing (incomplete) or of poor quality (information bias). 16 In contrast, in retrospective studies, progression and exposure to PFs occurs before the actual start of the research.…”

“…Two additional randomised trials 255,262 and seven cohort studies 259,[263][264][265][266][267][268] met the inclusion criteria and were included. From the results presented in Table 30, it was possible to estimate the yearly probability of progressing from the various OAG stages.…”

“…It is a chronic progressive optic neuropathy with characteristic extracellular matrix (ECM) changes in the optic nerve head (ONH) and subsequent visual field defects. The main risk factor for onset and progression of the disease is raised intraocular pressure (IOP), [3][4][5][6][7] which is a result of obstruction to aqueous humor (AqH) outflow at the level of the trabecular meshwork (TM). Lowering of IOP is currently the only therapeutic approach available, which does not address the underlying ECM/fibrotic pathology.…”
