Risk Factors for Retrolental Fibroplasia

Abstract: Besides oxygen administration and immaturity of the premature retinal vessels, there are other risk factors for retrolental fibroplasia: (1) respiratory distress syndrome; (2) multiple episodes of bradycardia apnoea; (3) exchange transfusions; (4) hyaline membrane disease; (5) anemia of prematurity; (6) hyperbilirubinemia; (7) avitaminosis E; (8) cardiovascular defects; (9) infectious diseases; (10) multiple births; (11) hypocalcemia; (12) hypothermia; (13) hemorrhagic tendency; (14) delayed coaptation of the … Show more

“…The examinations would be concluded when Zone III retinal vascularization was attained without In addition to the demographic data of the patients, the course and severity of ROP, the treatment outcomes of ROP, and the associated risk factors for the development of ROP were documented and analyzed. Possible systemic risk factors associated with ROP were collected, including the Apgar score at 1 minute and 5 minutes, 3 atrial septal defect, 19 bronchopulmonary dysplasia, 19 intraventricular hemorrhage, 5 necrotizing enterocolitis, 5 patent ductus arteriosus, 5 respiratory distress syndrome, 20 sepsis, 20 pneumonia, 5 anemia, usage of surfactant, blood transfusion, 5 duration of oxygen usage, 20 and assisted ventilation. 21 Possible maternal risk factors included maternal age, 22 type of delivery, gestational diabetes, 23 premature rupture of membrane, chorioamnionitis, 24 pregnancy-induced hypertension, 25 placenta previa, abruption previa, preeclampsia, 7 eclampsia, and multiple delivery.…”
