Risk Factors of Recurrent Ectopic Pregnancy in Patients Treated With in vitro Fertilization Cycles: A Matched Case-Control Study

Abstract: Objective: To study the risk factors for recurrent ectopic pregnancy (REP) in patients undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF). Methods: This was a 1:4 matched case-control study that enrolled 227 REP patients and 908 matched intrauterine pregnancy (IUP) patients from the assisted reproductive technology (ART) center of the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University from January 2012 to November 2019. Univariate analysis was carried out between the two groups for the occurrence of REP. Multivariate logi… Show more

“…According to Bozkaya et al, a cut-off value of 0.545 for IOS has 81.6% sensitivity and 59.5% specificity for the prognosis of ectopic pregnancy [144]. This indicator can be especially important during an artificial insemination, as the frequency of ectopic pregnancy and spontaneous abortions in such patients remain high [152].…”

“…Compared with patients with no history of EP, patients with a history of EP had a higher risk of recurrent EP after IVF treatment, which ranged from 0.6% to 8.9% in the published studies [7][8][9]. Previous studies assessing the pregnancy outcomes only focused on women with a previous single EP [7][8][9][10]. There are few data on pregnancy outcomes in women with previous recurrent EP who undergoing IVF treatment [11][12][13][14].…”

“…Binary logistic regression was used to identify the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for factors independently related to reproductive outcomes. Variables that are believed to influence both histories of ectopic pregnancy and pregnancy outcome were considered potential confounders [ 5 , 9 , 10 ]. These variables included female age, infertility duration, antral follicle count, cause of infertility, stimulation protocols, duration of stimulation, the number of oocytes retrieved, fertilization rate, stage of embryos transferred, type of embryos transferred, and the number of embryos transferred.…”

“…During ART treatment, fallopian tube factors remain a major risk factor for EP, especially in women with a prior history of fallopian tube surgery [14]. Patients who undergo a conservative operation or tubal microsurgery have a higher incidence of EP after assisted pregnancy [15]. Some researchers also supposed that salpingectomy and tubal infertility were the most important variables affecting the risk of IP [13].…”
