Risk indicators for dental erosive wear among 18‐yr‐old subjects in Oslo, Norway

Abstract: The aim was to investigate risk indicators associated with dental erosive wear among 18-yr-old subjects in Oslo, Norway. Of 3,206 adolescents invited to participate in a screening examination for erosive wear, 1,456 were examined (giving a response rate of 45%). As part of the examination all participants completed a self-administered questionnaire. Associations between the presence of erosive lesions and the possible risk indicators were assessed by logistic regression analyses, taking into account the hierar… Show more

“…An increased risk of dental erosion related to gender has been demonstrated [Bardolia et al, 2010;Hasselkvist et al, 2010;Mulic et al, 2012;Søvik et al, 2014], while other studies have not documented any differences [Bartlett et al, 2013;Jensdottir et al, 2004]. Moreover, tooth-brushing frequency has been associated with dental erosion in some studies [Bardolia et al, 2010;Mulic et al, 2012;Zero and Lussi, 2006], while other reports have not corroborated this conclusion [Bartlett et al, 2013;El Aidi et al, 2011;Millward et al, 1994].…”

“…The aetiology is considered to be multifactorial, and the consumption of acidic food and beverages is assumed to be an important contributor to its development [Bartlett et al, 2013;Jarvinen et al, 1991;Lussi, 2006;Lussi et al, 2004]. Even though the prevalence of dental erosion and its association with acidic drinks have been extensively investigated [Dugmore and Rock, 2004;El Aidi et al, 2011;Hasselkvist et al, 2010;Jarvinen et al, 1991;Jensdottir et al, 2004;Johansson et al, 2002;Lussi et al, 2004;Millward et al, 1994;Moazzez et al, 2000;Mulic et al, 2012], previous studies have had a limited focus in describing a doseresponse relationship between an individual's total daily consumption of acidic beverages and the extent of dental erosive wear. …”
