Risk Indicators for Tooth Wear in Sri Lankan Adolescents

Abstract: The aim of the study was to determine the risk indicators for tooth wear in Sri Lankan adolescents. A total of 1,200 17-year-olds were selected using a two-stage cluster sampling technique from schools in the Colombo district. The data were collected by means of a self-administered questionnaire and a clinical examination. A modified version of Smith and Knight’s index of tooth wear was used to record tooth wear on occlusal/incisal, buccal and lingual/palatal surfaces of teeth excluding the third molars. “…In contrast with others [Lussi and Schaffner, 2000;O'Sullivan and Curzon, 2000;Dugmore and Rock, 2004;Bardolia et al, 2010;Ratnayake and Ekanayake, 2010], the present study did not identify a significant positive association between erosive wear and carbonated soft drinks, not a unique result [Bartlett et al, 1998;van Rijkom et al, 2002;Milosevic et al, 2004]. The narrow 95% CIs show that if the increase in risk had been more than 5% the effect would have been significant.…”

“…The factor vitamin included all kinds of vitamins and did not discriminate between chewable vitamins and vitamins that are swallowed. There is some evidence that chewable vitamin C and erosion are connected [Hays et al, 1992;Maron, 1996;Ratnayake and Ekanayake, 2010]. In the present study, the use of vitamins may represent a lifestyle that increases the chance of erosive wear to progress.…”

“…When adjusting for gender in the multivariate analysis, this association was not significant. These results corresponded with previously reported studies [El Aidi et al, 2011;Ratnayake and Ekanayake, 2010]. However, El Aidi et al [2011] did not find any significant association between erosive tooth wear (both incidence and progression) and swilling, direct swallowing or drinking from a straw.…”

“…Tooth wear is considered to be a growing problem in several countries [Ratnayake and Ekanayake, 2010]. Although its prevalence varies a lot between the investigations, there is no evidence that this oral condition causes a negative impact on COHRQoL.…”
