Rivers as political borders: a new subnational geospatial dataset

Abstract: Rivers are commonly used to define political borders, but no global study has quantified the importance of rivers on territorial delimitation at subnational scales. This paper presents Global Subnational River-Borders (GSRB), a first comprehensive geospatial dataset of subnational, as well as national, political borders set by large rivers. GSRB incorporates three previous vector datasets (GAUL, GRWL + +, and WDBII) to map and quantify the use of large rivers as political borders at local, state, and national … Show more

“…All the other cultural services were more moderately ranked with preference scores between 2 and 2.5. Rivers used as political and administrative boundaries scored the lowest preference score, though the natural boundaries provided by rivers are clearly a very significant cultural and political service; a recent global geospatial database has mapped rivers as national and sub-national borders [44].…”

“…Initial findings suggest that about one-third of the high preference scoring ecosystem services are relatively easy and the data is readily accessible. For example, the mapping of river reaches flowing through protected areas, or along political boundaries will be simple; global datasets, such as the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA), Key Biodiversity Areas and Global Subnational River-Borders (GSRB) already exist [44]. Other indicators can be derived from population density or census data, for example, water supply calculated from populations in each sub-basin, or pressures due to urban run-off.…”

“…A main obstacle to modeling studies of API residues in transboundary catchments is the restricted access to detailed national and regional API‐specific consumption data (Tiedeken et al 2017 ). Additional obstacles include different national and regional water management strategies, diverse wastewater treatment efficiencies, the heterogeneity of the landscape, seasonal variation in environmental conditions, and variable demographics (Popelka and Smith 2020 ).…”
