Viruses infecting sorghum are widely distributed in Asia and Africa and are of economic importance. In recent years, apparent virus disease incidence has increased, probably due to changes in agricultural practices associated with the introduction of hybrids and new varieties that are being developed and released continuously. The first virus disease described on sorghum in the world was Sugarcane mosaic virus (SCMV). Nigeria is one of the leading sorghum producing countries in the world and most of its populace in the northern part depend on sorghum as their primary staple food and so far, seven viruses have been identified on sorghum in Nigeria: Maize mosaic virus (MMV), Maize stripe virus (MSpV), Maize streak virus (MSV), Sugarcane mosaic virus (SCMV), Guinea grass mosaic virus (GGMV), Sorghum mosaic virus (SrMV) and Maize dwarf mosaic virus (MDMV). This calls for proper molecular characterization and deployment of management strategies of the diseases the viruses incite. Future research needs are discussed.

1 to $5 inbred lines, derived from a maize population bred for its overall resistance to three tropical viruses, were screened for resistance to maize streak virus (MSV) by artificial plant infection using viruliferous leafhoppers. Symptoms were rated and intra-line frequency distributions studied for all pedigree inbred lines. Mortality due to MSV was very low among these inbreds. Symptoms appeared later, developed slower and were less severe than in the susceptible control hybrid. Results of a study of 500 $1 and 93 $2 lines suggested that resistance is under genetic control via a system involving loci with major genes (with dominance for resistance) controlling high to complete resistance, associated with a genetic system involving loci with minor genes controlling partial resistance. Lines expressing complete resistance to MSV were developed from 5 cycles of inbreeding and selection. The relevance of such complete and partial resistance is discussed.

Whiteflies (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) can cause direct and indirect damages on plants, especially vegetables. There is only limited information regarding taxonomy and population dynamic of whiteflies attacking vegetables in Indonesia. This research is conducted to identify species of whitefly collected from chili pepper, tomato, and soybean, and to study their population dynamic. The information gathered from these studies will be useful to support whitefly management in the field. Based on morphology identification of the puparium collected directly from the host plants, there were four species of whitefly identified from chili pepper, tomato, and soybean in Bogor, Cianjur, and Sukabumi, i.e. Bemisia tabaci, Aleurodicus dispersus, Trialeurodes vaporariorum, and Dialeurodes sp. The presence of B. tabaci on chili pepper and tomato was associated with virus infection that causes yellowing and leaf curl disease. This population of B. tabaci tended to increase along with plant growth and generally reached the highest population when the plant was 60-70 days after planting.
