Road Transport of Farm Animals: Mortality, Morbidity, Species and Country of Origin at a Southern Italian Control Post

Abstract: Simple SummaryLong distance transportation is a welfare concern because it may cause sickness (i.e., morbidity) or death (i.e., mortality). Commercial transportation in Europe is regulated by the Council Regulation (EC) No. 1/2005 which regulates the maximum journey in the different species. After this time animals must be unloaded for resting, watering and feeding at control posts (CPs) where Official Veterinarians (OVs) have to check their health. This study analyzed the surveillance reports filled by OVs at… Show more

“…The processes of loading and unloading animals into and out of the transport vehicles are a particularly high-risk period [4,5]. The adverse impacts on animal welfare caused during transportation include thermal and physical discomfort, stress, muscular damage and dehydration, and behavioral and movement limitations [6]. Although there is a considerable amount of documented work on road transport in farm animals, most studies have been conducted in temperate regions.…”

“…This new approach to the issue concerning animal welfare has led to the establishment of solid requirements to prevent unnecessary pain to farm animals regardless of where they are. Every day millions of farm animals are transported all over the world and the road transport of farm animals is an essential part of the widespread farm production system (Padalino, Tullio, Cannone, Bozzo, 2018). The traceability of animals within the European Union is an important and fundamental issue in securing consumer confidence and in prevention in case of spreading animal diseases (Di Pasquale, et al 2009).…”
