Robotic autonomous systems for earthmoving in military applications

Abstract: Along with increasing innovations in frontier engineering sciences, the advancement in Robotic Autonomous Systems (RAS) has brought about a new horizon in earthmoving processes for construction. In the military domain, there is also an increasing interest in utilising RAS technologies. In particular, ground-based forces are frequently called upon to conduct earthmoving tasks as part of military operations, tasks which could be partially or fully aided by the employment of RAS technologies. There have been rapi… Show more

“…C onsidering the aspect foreshadowed in the conclusion of the previous section, it should be noted that the autonomisation of land, air, sea and submersible weapons is progressing (Ha et al 2019). An important representative in the new wave of weapon systems is the Orca Extra-Large Unmanned Undersea Vehicle, a 51-feet-long vessel weighing approximately 50 tons, capable of operating for several months without surfacing (Mizokami 2019).…”

“…A fully autonomous solution for robotic excavation must be able to identify and adapt to these variable conditions in order to achieve consistent bucket filling performance. Such a system would have obvious applications in construction [5], military [6], mining [7], and space exploration/development [8] where humans cannot be present for safety, logistical, and/or cost reasons.…”
