Robust Cassie State of Wetting in Transparent Superhydrophobic Coatings

Abstract: This paper investigates the stability of the Cassie state of wetting in transparent superhydrophobic coatings by comparing a single-layer microporous coating with a doublelayer micro/nanoporous coating. Increasing pressure resistance of superhydrophobic coatings is of interest for practical use because high external pressures may be exerted on surfaces during operation. The Cassie state stability against the external pressure of coatings was investigated by squeezing droplets sitting on surfaces with a hydroph… Show more

“…Very small colloids (<30 nm), such as organically modified silica (ORMOSIL) particles, can be used to generate uniform antireflective coatings, but typically require the addition of stabilizing elements to make robust films. [198][199][200] Larger colloids can be used, with or without other materials, to generate hierarchically structured materials with very high transmission values. 188,201,202 Figure 9 shows an example of such a structure created by using a monolayer of colloids as an etch mask to make a grating structure on which a disordered array of gold nanoparticles is created.…”

“…Tuvshindorj et al [3] investigated the effect of different levels of surface topography on the stability of the Cassie state of wetting (droplets freely roll off the surfaces) in large-area and transparent superhydrophobic coatings. Three different organically modified silica (ormosil) coatings, (i) nanoporous hydrophobic coating (NC); (ii) microporous superhydrophobic coating (MC); and (iii) double-layer superhydrophobic coating with nanoporous bottom and microporous top layers (MNC), were prepared on glass surfaces (Figure 3a).…”

“…One of the most challenging aspects of preparing non-wettable coatings is to maintain a good degree of transparency while retaining robust and scratch resistant self-cleaning and stain free characteristics [1][2][3]. Transparency and surface roughness are generally contradictory properties.…”

“…The method for assessing wear resistance of coatings used to characterize them in the work has several advantages over the methods used to characterize such objects [16]. In particular, the nature of action of abrasive particles on the surface is close to the real situation of abrasive action.…”
