Robust light transport simulation via metropolised bidirectional estimators

Abstract: Efficiently simulating light transport in various scenes with a single algorithm is a difficult and important problem in computer graphics. Two major issues have been shown to hinder the efficiency of the existing solutions: light transport due to multiple highly glossy or specular interactions, and scenes with complex visibility between the camera and light sources. While recent bidirectional path sampling methods such as vertex connection and merging/unified path sampling (VCM/UPS) efficiently deal with high… Show more

“…It would be interesting to see more sophisticated integrators being ported to the gradient domain to achieve even more robust gradient sampling. For example, as mentioned by Sun et al [SSC * 17], a potential extension is to bring Markov chain Monte Carlo with bidirectional estimators [ŠOHK16] to the gradient domain. Another interesting extension is to establish connections from local path space perturbation techniques for Markov chain Monte Carlo [JM12, KHD14, HKD15] to shift mapping since such techniques could explore the path space that corresponds to neighbor pixels.…”

“…The first such rendering method was Metropolis Light Transport [VG97]. Since then a number of improvements were made, including the combination of MLT and VCM by Šik et al [ŠOHK16]. More about MCMC in general can be found in a recent survey from Šik and Krivánek [ŠK18].…”

“…In this setting, it could also be interesting to use our usefulness measure with a Metropolis approach. For instance, the binary visibility and contribution target functions used by Šik et al [ŠOHK16] could additionally apply our usefulness threshold, to focus on useful photons. Support for volumetric caustics should also be possible with these approaches.…”

“…Metropolised VCM [ŠOHK16] distributes photons according to their MIS weighted image contribution. That improves efficiency by tracing fewer photons with low MIS weights.…”
