ROC-Boosting: A Feature Selection Method for Health Identification Using Tongue Image

Abstract: Objective. To select significant Haar-like features extracted from tongue images for health identification. Materials and Methods. 1,322 tongue cases were included in this study. Health information and tongue images of each case were collected. Cases were classified into the following groups: group containing 148 cases diagnosed as health; group containing 332 cases diagnosed as ill based on health information, even though tongue image is normal; and group containing 842 cases diagnosed as ill. Haar-like featu… Show more

“…Tongue diagnosis is the vital component of observation diagnosis of TCM to examine the physiological and pathological changes of the human body. Tongue diagnosis, as a concept for the preventive treatment of diseases, originates from Su Wen (plain questions) ( 11 ). It is a simple, non-invasive and valuable diagnostic procedure that has been repeatedly verified by clinical practitioners of TCM for at least 2,000 years ( 12 , 13 ).…”

“…Tongue diagnosis requires proper skills and specific light conditions. Despite the difficulty, mostly because the diagnosis relies on the practitioner experience and knowledge, several approaches based on digital image capture and computerized tongue examination systems have been proposed and used in large scale studies, demonstrating its applicability for health identification and disease differentiation [ 35 , 36 , 37 , 38 ]. The Automatic Tongue Diagnosis System (ATDS, Figure 2 ) comprises hardware responsible for the image acquisition and software that allows the tongue body segmentation, feature extraction, and diagnosis.…”

“…Recently, instead of observing and recording tongue features, research has been focusing on objective tongue feature analysis with the benefit of modern technology. Tongue features have been digitally analyzed to discover convenient ways to detect diseases [ 10 , 11 , 12 ]. The extensive application of artificial intelligence techniques [ 13 ] in the medical field has increased objectivity in the interpretation of the relationship between tongue features and diseases.…”
