Role of arbuscular mycorrhiza in arresting reactive oxygen species (ROS) and strengthening antioxidant defense in Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp. nodules under salinity (NaCl) and cadmium (Cd) stress

Abstract: Application of phosphate fertilizers and biosolids enhances Cd contamination in arid and semi-arid regions. Increased concentration of dissolved chloride (Cl -) in saline solution increases Cd solubility and bioavailability. Nodules are soft targets for NaCl and Cd stresses due to adverse effects on their functioning. Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi enhance plant growth in contaminated sites. Greenhouse experiments were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of Funneliformis mosseae in arresting toxic ion transp… Show more

“…However, the increased activities of these antioxidant enzymes (SOD, APX and GPX) in mycorrhizal plants did not provide enough protection against ROS as judged by the simultaneously exaggerated oxidative stress (H 2 O 2 and MDA contents). Therefore, an enhanced antioxidative metabolism could increase the capacity of mycorrhizal plants to scavenge ROS only to a certain extent [ 79 ].…”

“…In addition, ROS triggers the pathogen-associated molecular pattern-triggered immunity (PTI) by acting as a secondary messenger ( Neill et al, 2002 ; Nürnberger et al, 2004 ; Zhang et al, 2009 ; Sang and Macho, 2017 ). Meanwhile, plant pathogens evolved ability to detoxify plant-derived ROS either by enzymatic ( Staerck et al, 2017 ) or non-enzymatic mechanism, to ensure successful infection ( Garg and Chandel, 2015 ).…”

“…Role of AM in modulating thiol metabolism in relation to heavy metal stress such as Cd and Zn has been recently realized (Garg and Kaur, 2013; Garg and Chandel, 2015). However, to the best of our knowledge there is no report on the effect of AM on thiol metabolism in plants under As-stress.…”
