“…These common origins are reflected in the similarity of both morphology and the sex-linked gene sequences between W and X, and Z and Y (Miura et al, 1998). Restriction fragment-length polymorphism analyses of AAT and AR discriminate between the W and Z chromosomes and between the X and Y chromosomes (Miura et al, 1998;Sakisaka et al, 2000;Ohtani et al, 2003). In the ZZ/ZW type, ZZ male and ZW female, respectively, are shown by homozygous bands a/a and heterozygous bands a/b, while in the XX/ XY type, XX female and XY male, respectively, are shown by bands b/b and b/a (Figure 2).…”

“…As for AR, we amplified the AR fragment using the above primers from ZZ and WW cDNA, sequenced and identified one nucleotide difference between them and found that it gives TaqI site to Z/Y alleles but not to W/X alleles. The sex linkage is confirmed using genomic southern hybridization (unpublished) and is partly proved by Ohtani et al (2003).…”

“…Although VTG is considered primarily synthesized in the liver, studies have shown that vtg mRNA could also be detected in extrahepatic tissues, especially the gonad, and could be induced following exposure to estrogenic chemicals (Wang et al, 2005). Dmrt1 plays critical role in male gonadal differentiation and maintenance (Ohtani et al, 2003;Matson et al, 2010) and it appears to be down-regulated in response to estrogen (Marchand et al, 2000) and up-regulated in response to androgen (Shibata et al, 2002). In the present study, vtg mRNA levels in liver and gonad and dmrt1 mRNA levels in gonad were also up-regulated in male fish upon 14-d exposure to PCP.…”

“…Since then, a variety of expression studies have shown that aromatase is indeed a female specific factor that is primarily expressed in the ovaries of this species (Yoshida et al, 1996;Andrews et al, 1997). Amphibians are also strongly influenced by aromatase, and express this gene when exposed to female-inducing factors such as hormones and temperatures (Ohtani et al, 2003;Akatsuka et al, 2005). Furthermore, treatment with aromatase inhibitors has a masculinizing effect in urodeles, similar to the situation in chickens (Chardard and Dournon, 1999).…”
