Role of Breast Ultrasound and Mammography in Evaluating Patients Presenting with Focal Breast Pain in the Absence of a Palpable Lump

Abstract: To determine if ultrasound and/or mammography is helpful in detecting breast cancers in patients presenting with focal breast pain. Patients who presented between February 2008 and April 2011 with focal breast pain without a lump were included in the study. The mammographic and US findings were retrospectively reviewed. BIRADS 0, 4, and 5 were considered positive on mammogram while BIRADS 4 and 5 were considered positive on US. The efficacy of mammogram-alone, ultrasound-alone, and in combination to detect bre… Show more

“…Mammography and ultrasonography demonstrate sensitivity rates of 85–88 % [47] and 93–97 % [710] for a general screening and diagnostic population, while the iBE in this population of known detectable findings demonstrated a comparable sensitivity of 85.7 %. The performance of this device meets the threshold of a pre-screening device when compared to the current pre-screening tool, CBE, which has a sensitivity of 50–60 % [11, 12].…”

“…Even though studies support the view that no strong relations exist between breast pain and breast cancer, the uneasiness and fear of breast cancer caused by pain are persistent (12,13). In assessing the relation of mastalgia with cancer, it is important to determine the type of mastalgia and to uncover the underlying reason for pain using other diagnostic tools in the ensuing period.…”
