Role of CD147 (EMMPRIN/Basigin) in Tissue Remodeling

Abstract: CD147, also known as extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (EMMPRIN) or basigin, is expressed in a variety of cell types. It is involved in the regulation of extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling during physiological and pathological processes including wound healing, inflammatory diseases, and cancer. CD147 is a diagnostic and therapeutic target in cancer and inflammatory diseases, either directly or indirectly, by targeting CD147 partners. It can trigger matrix metalloproteinase inductions involved … Show more

“…Due to these results, BSG, a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily, was determined to be a potential stimulator of MMP. It stimulated MMP-mediated ECM degradation, cell adhesion, and cell-cell interactions and played a crucial part in tumor cell invasion [9,[51][52][53][54]. BSG could also promote tumor angiogenesis via regulating MMPs and VEGF.…”

“…The pleiotropic effects of CD147 is uniquely demonstrated in its ability to promote either lysis or fibrosis dependent on cell microenvironment and cell-cell interactions. Inflammation induces glycosylation of CD147, promoting adhesion, migration and enhancement of inflammatory signaling (NF-κB) and synthesis of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) (24,25). CD147 has been deeply implicated in thrombotic and inflammatory pathways in coronary artery disease (CAD) progression due to its wide expression on many cell types including hematopoietic, endothelial cells, leukocytes, platelets, to name a few (26).…”

“…CD147, also known as basigin or extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (EMMPRIN), is expressed in a variety of human cells. CD147 regulates extracellular matrix remodeling during many critical biological processes, including cancer, inflammatory disease, and wound healing [ 37 ]. It could be the case that some SARS-CoV-2 receptor variants and expression levels in different patients may be associated with more severe forms of the infection.…”
