Role of flow cytometry for the improvement of bioprocessing of oleaginous microorganisms

Abstract: Oleaginous microorganisms, such as yeast, fungi, microalgae and bacteria, represent a key segment of second generation feed‐stock materials and are considered to synthesize a wide range of industrially important chemical compounds. Oleaginous microorganisms possess a broad varieties of chemical compounds such as carotenoids, pigments, carbohydrates, chlorophyll, and storage‐material lipids. Oleaginous microorganisms have been recognized as promising sources for the synthesis of unsaturated, especially polyunsa… Show more

“…As similar, a typical automated cell counter was further optimized for the facilitated quantification of chlorophyll content in microalgae [24]. Nevertheless, our previous work illustrated that although automated cell counter was not favorably effective, flow cytometry-based analysis was revealed as the best analytical instrument to work with microalgae [25], as also commonly stressed by other researchers [26][27][28].…”

“…In general, two phases are involved in accumulation of excessive amount of intracellular fatty acids in oleaginous microorganisms (Davies and Holdsworth, 1992). The oleaginous microbe consumes available nitrogen for cell growth and proliferation in the first stage and further converts available carbon into intracellular fatty acids mainly under nitrogen limitation condition (Davies and Holdsworth, 1992;Sonowal et al, 2019). Symbiotic association helps to overcome few barriers associated with oleaginous microbes hence reducing cost associated with production of microbial biofuels.…”
