Role of histamine in heartworm extract-induced shock in dogs

Abstract: Results of our study indicate that an unknown mast cell-degranulating substances contained in HW extract may degranulate mast cells directly, consequently releasing histamine that may participate in the onset of shock in HW extract-induced shock in dogs.

“…Tissue cultures of the liver were performed and yielded a very light growth of Enterococcus cecorum and Clostridium perfringens , which were interpreted as post‐mortem contaminates. The histopathologic findings were supportive of the clinical diagnosis of anaphylaxis, with acute haemorrhage secondary to focal hepatic rupture having played a pivotal role in the patient's progression and demise (Dean & Webb, 1924; Kitoh et al., 1998).…”

“…Various veterinary studies have measured histamine levels in canine plasma/serum using immunoassays originally developed for human samples (e.g., opioid-induced anaphylactoid reactions; cardiovascular injuries; heartworm infections; mast cell tumors) [ 27 , 28 , 29 , 30 ]. To the best of our knowledge, serum histamine concentrations have never been reported in naturally occurring cases of anaphalytic reaction, to a drug or other stimuli.…”

“…Parasitic materials are foreign antigens that may trigger a type I immunoglobulin E-mediated hypersensitivity reaction. Dirofilaria immitis extract can result in shock and elevated plasma histamine level in dogs, 7 while hydatid cyst (Echinococcus spp) rupture has been associated with anaphylactic shock. 8 We believe the partial breach of the parasitic tissue envelope during our surgical dissection led to contact of parasitic material with host tissue.…”
