Role of Moringa Olifera Leaf Meal on the Growth Performance of Poultry/African Catfish–A Review

Abstract: Moringa oleifera commonly referred to as the drumstick tree is a plant from the Moringaceae family. It is a medicinal plant that was found to be loaded with different bioactive chemicals or secondary metabolites such as vitamins, minerals, saponins, alkaloids, flavonoids and carotenoids etc, which are involved in enhancing a long term health benefits. M. olifera is among the most promising species based on their high antioxidant activity, high contents of micro-nutrients, processing properties, ease of growing… Show more

“…Additionally and interestingly, the lipid profile of lipid-rich broiler chicken diets, has been shown to mirror the adipose tissue of the chicken ( Wang, Kim, Cline & Gilbert, 2017 ; Zollitsch, Knaus, Aichinger & Lettner, 1997 ) which (adipose tissue) accretion can impact body mass. Moringa oleifera leaf meal ( Alagbe, 2019 ) and Baobab seed meal contain coarse fibre ( Svihus, 2014 ): use of these meals as dietary components in poultry diets positively impacts poultry performance by improving digestion and nutrient absorption ( Alagbe, 2017 ; Gunya, 2016 ; Nkukwana et al., 2014 ). Our findings show that dietary MNM had no effect on the GIT (proventriculus, ventriculus, small and large intestines, caeca) and GIT accessory organ (liver and pancreas) masses as well as the lengths of the small and large intestines of the GF suggesting that the MNM neither compromised nor improved GIT accessory organs growth, development, and digestive function.…”

“…The haemoglobin values indicate that the replacement of doum palm pulp meal in pig diets was nutritionally sufficient, thus preventing parasitic infections and damage of vital organs such as liver and kidney [26]. Decrease in the production of red blood cells could be as a result of renal disorders, chronic inflammatory disease, bone marrow disorders and nutritional deficiency [27].…”

“…They also need to consider location. Ponds located under trees with fragile leaves are not recommended (Alagbe, 2019). Also, they need to consider the surrounding land whether it is unused or marginal when deciding where to place their pool.…”
