Role of Nanoclay Shape and Surface Characteristics on the Morphology and Thermal Properties of Polystyrene Nanocomposites Synthesized via Emulsion Polymerization

Abstract: This work evaluates the role of the surface properties and shape of clay type on the morphology, thermal, and thermo-mechanical properties of the polystyrene (PS)/clay nanocomposites prepared via free-radical emulsion polymerization. Attapulgite clay (ATT) with a needle-like morphology and montmorillonite clay (MMT) with a platelet-like structure were used in this study. The dispersed behavior of the clay particles in the PS matrix was studied using X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Only … Show more

“…In another study by Choi et al, a similar trend was observed and the results were attributed to clay platelets acting as “additional micelles” which allow polymerization to take place in more micelles, decreasing molecular weight in the process. It is also thought that the molecular weights of nanocomposites are affected to some extent by the clay type . As such, because of the large surface area‐to‐volume ratio of MMT clay platelets, most initiator radicals adsorb onto the VBDA–MMT surface thereby increasing the chain termination probability and decreasing the initiator efficiency …”

“…The intense research on clay‐based nanocomposites is largely due to the availability and low cost of clay materials and the high surface area‐to‐volume ratio of the individual clay platelets . Polymeric films are the common materials used as coatings to protect sensitive materials from the environment.…”

“…Nanoclays are widely used in the modification of polymer matrices to improve their mechanical, thermal, and barrier properties . One of the most conventionally used nanoclays is montmorillonite (MMT), which has a 2:1 layered structure with two silica tetrahedrons sandwiching an alumina octahedron . Attapulgite (ATT) is a type of natural fibrous nanoclay approximately 20–70 nm in diameter and several micrometers in length.…”

“…In the other hand, emulsion type polymerization has been successfully performed to prepare polymer nanocomposites with various polymer matrices. Usually there is a heterogeneous phase to start the polymerization . In the case of polymer modified clay minerals, organic modifiers are often used to make the silicate layers hydrophobic and facilitate the penetration of monomers …”

“…In this study, organo‐Fe 3 O 4 ‐palygorskite nanoparticles, with high surface hydrophobicity and strong affinity for styrene monomers to facilitate encapsulation by polystyrene, were used to remove oil from wastewater by application of a magnetic field. A heterogeneous phase polymerization was used and the nanoparticles were characterized and evaluated for their performance in the removal of oil from the oily water samples.…”
