Role of Natural Gas Consumption in the Reduction of CO2 Emissions: Case of Azerbaijan

Abstract: Azerbaijan signed the Paris Agreement in 2016 and committed to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 35% in 2030. Meanwhile, natural gas has been vital component in the total energy mix of Azerbaijan economy and accounted for almost 65% of the total energy consumption. In the overall electricity mix, natural gas-fired power plants generate 93% of the country’s electricity. Since global energy consumption is responsible for 73% of human-caused greenhouse-gas emissions, and CO2 makes up more than 74% of the tota… Show more

“…Hasanov et al (2023) [118] proposed biogas production as a pivotal solution for energy supply, offering a means to mitigate the detrimental effects of fossil fuel consumption, as the burning of these fuels has substantially elevated CO 2 and other GHG concentrations in the atmosphere since the industrial era's onset [119], exerting a profound influence on climate change. Azerbaijan takes this issue in particular into account [120].…”

“…32 Gurbanov investigated the effect of natural gas consumption on carbon emissions in Azerbaijan and discovered that increasing the proportion of natural gas in the energy mix reduces CO 2 emissions. 33 However, Azad et al investigated the relationship between energy consumption and CO 2 emissions in Bangladesh. And their study proposed that while natural gas use increases CO 2 emissions and contributes less than petroleum products.…”

“…A distributed energy system is considered energy efficient and ecofriendly [17]. Gurbanov et al analyzed the role of natural gas consumption in the reduction of CO 2 emissions in Azerbaijan, and the results showed that when the share of natural gas increases by 1 percent in the total energy mix, CO 2 emission per capita decreases by approximately 0.14 percent [18]. Broesicke et al [19] found that the decentralized natural gas power generation system decreased conventional air pollutant emissions and natural gas consumption relative to the centralized system.…”
