Role of Oxygen in the Work Function Modification at Various Stages of Chemically Synthesized Graphene

Abstract: Correlation between the work function and oxygen content at various stages during synthesis of graphene by chemical route is presented. The values of work function in terms of contact surface potential difference (CPD) were estimated using a scanning Kelvin probe method. Oxygen content was determined using energy dispersive X-ray absorption (EDAX), and the data was further supported using the Rutherford back scattering method in oxygen resonance mode. Results indicated a linear correlation between the oxygen c… Show more

“…The presence of different oxygen functional groups on the GO surface resulted in difference of its WF compared to graphene [147]. Among the different reduction methods of GO, thermal reduction was regularly reported as an effective method in changing the functional groups of GO and recovering the πconjugated structure of graphene sheets along with enhancing the electrical properties of the GO sheets.…”

“…According to Nair el al., the membranes only allow water vapour to pass through and completely block the vapours of ethanol and other alcohol molecules. In their work, GO was prepared by Hummers Method [38] and then through vigorous ultra-sonication and centrifugation, graphene oxide (GO) sheets with an average size of 1 m were prepared [39][40][41][42][43][44]. In order to make GO membranes, the GO solution can be vacuum filtered in a conventional way on an alumina template support.…”

“…On that basis they projected a significant tunability in the WF of rGO (up to ~2.5 eV) by altering the composition of the oxygen-containing functional groups ( Figure 6 ). Mishra et al [ 119 ] experimentally evaluated the WF of GO as a function of oxygen content. They employed contact surface potential difference (CPD) estimation as an indicator of WF using a scanning Kelvin probe method (SKPM).…”
