Role of tau protein on neocortical and hippocampal oscillatory patterns

Abstract: ABSTRACT:Tau is a neuronal microtubule-associated protein implicated in microtubules stabilization, axonal establishment and elongation during neuronal morphogenesis. Because of its elevated expression in neocortical regions and hippocampus, tau might play a role in sculpting collective neural responses underlying slow and fast brain oscillations and/or long-range synchronization patterns between hippocampus and neocortex. To test this hypothesis, local field potentials were recorded in tau-deficient (tau 2/2 … Show more

“…Tau knockout mice have decreased peak frequency of theta waves in the hippocampus and decreased coherence of gamma waves in the frontal cortex (Cantero et al). The potential effects of these alterations on Aβ-induced dysrythmias and cognitive abnormalities remain to be determined.…”

“…Cantero and colleagues examined the local field potential from various cortical regions and hippocampus of tau knockout mice to determine if delayed axonal maturation of tau knockout neurons observed in vitro [40] could possibly affect neuronal circuit formation in vivo [51]. They found slower theta rhythms of the hippocampus and reduced gamma synchronization between cortical brain regions in tau knockout mice, which may suggest impaired circuit formation.…”
