Role of technological innovation, renewable and non-renewable energy, and economic growth on environmental quality. Evidence from African countries

Abstract: This study examines the impact of renewable and non-renewable energy consumption on carbon emissions, considering the role of population density, urbanization, foreign direct investment, technological innovation, and trade openness for African countries from 1990 to 2019. We apply an advanced econometric methodology like the cross-sectional autoregressive distributed model (CS-ARDL) for long-run and short-run estimation, which allows for the cross-sectional dependencies and slope heterogeneity. Our finding sho… Show more

“…In contrast, using renewable energy improves environmental quality by lowering CO2 emissions. The results of some studies (Ibrahim & Ajide, 2021;Usman et al, , 2023Wen et al, 2022;Zafar et al, 2019), indicate that economic growth and nonrenewable energy consumption increase carbon emissions, while renewable energy consumption reduces carbon emissions, support the findings of the current study.…”

“…While technological innovation is found to boost environmental quality, trade openness, industrialization, and economic growth are found to reduce it over time. Wen et al (2022) investigate the effects of renewable and non-renewable energy consumption on carbon emissions. Annual data for African countries from 1990 to 2019 are used to calculate the cross-sectional autoregressive distributed model (CS-ARDL).…”

“…GDP denotes domestic output of country i (1, 2, 3, 19), using real GDP at constant 2010 prices = US$100; t denotes the time (2010, 2011, 2012, ... 2021); renewable energy consumption (in exajoules). In this study, non-renewable energy consumption is the sum of natural gas consumption and petroleum consumption [44,45]. Hence, natural gas consumption (in exajoules); petroleum consumption consists of raw materials for fuel oil, gasoline, and other chemical products (in exajoules).…”

“…Economic development in urban areas causes people to come to the city with various purposes. In urban areas, urbanization is an important element in economic development (Wen et al, 2022). Hence, good urban planning must be prepared for high urbanization rates.…”
