Role of Water in the Lyotropic Liquid Crystalline Lithium Iodide–Iodine–Water–C12E10 Mesophase as a Gel Electrolyte in a Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell

Abstract: By replacing volatile and flammable organic-based electrolytes with gel electrolytes, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) may be a viable and more practical alternative to other clean energy sources. Although they present a promising alternative, gel electrolytes still have some drawbacks for practical applications, such as low ionic conductivity and infusion difficulties into the pores of the working electrode. Here, we introduce a new one-step fabrication method that uses a lyotropic liquid crystalline (LLC) … Show more

“…A similar trend is observed in the LiI/C 12 E 10 mesophase that is 2D hexagonal at low salt concentrations, but the LLC phase transforms into a soft mesocrystal at mole ratios of >3 . Moreover, the LiI/C 12 E 10 mesophase has been previously investigated in the presence of I 2 as a gel electrolyte in dye-sensitized solar cells . Therefore, we excluded the LiI/C 12 E 10 /H 2 O system and did not investigate it further in this work.…”

The patterns in Figure S1 show the XRD patterns of the LiSCN/C 12 E 10 /H 2 O system at small and large angles.…”

“…In addition, aqueous dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are emerging as a promising alternative to enhance both the lifetime and the environment-friendliness of the traditional DSSCs; 37−43 the water inclusion is extensively researched to replace the volatile and poisonous electrolyte in DSSCs. 44 Machine learning algorithms have initiated a digital disruption that improves everyday tasks and demonstrated their superiority in designing advanced functional materials, 45 including the halide perovskites. For instance, Wang et al introduced an efficient descriptor design method via symbolic regression for perovskite catalysts.…”

“…The photovoltaic conversion can be enhanced by utilizing nanosemiconductor surfaces modified with Ru(II) complexes that have a visible light response . A new structure of solar cells, namely, dye-sensitized solar cells, can be constructed based on this photosensitization effect. The Ru(II) complex commonly used is the N719 dye ( cis -[Ru(4-carboxy-4′-carboxylate-2,2′-bipyridine) 2 (NCS) 2 ]), which contains two carboxylic acid groups, two carboxylate groups, and two isothiocyanato (NCS) ligands . Since these groups are not in a plane, the molecule exhibits a spatial structure.…”
