Roles of Circular RNAs And Their Interactions With MicroRNAs in Human Disorders

Abstract: Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a class of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) that are involved in transcriptional and posttranscriptional gene expression regulation by sponging microRNAs (miRNAs). As miRNAs control a large set of biological processes, circRNA sponge activity also affects these pathways and thereby participates in human disease initiation and development. A growing number of works have confirmed that circRNAs may play critical roles in normal human tissues and organ functions and in the pathogenesis of hum… Show more

“…Circular RNAs (circRNAs) have emerged as a kind of novel noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) that regulate gene expression by acting as microRNA (miRNA) sponge and play vital roles in tumorigenesis (Sun, Wu, Wang, & Wang, 2018). Several circRNAs have been reported to be abnormally expressed in HCC, pointing out their essential roles in HCC pathogenesis (Hu et al, 2018).…”

“…Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) which mainly include circular RNAs (circRNAs), long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), and microRNAs (miRNAs) exert their regulatory roles in many biological processes, such as tumorigenesis, fibrogenesis, and also, immune regulation 6,7 . LncRNAs are characterized with a length of over 200 nucleotides, and expressed in both cytoplasm and nucleus 8 .…”

“…In recent years, a strong relationship of circular RNAs (circRNAs) and fibrogenesis has been elucidated. CircRNAs, a novel type of endogenous non-coding RNAs, are characterized by covalently closed loop structures with neither 5’ to 3’ polarity nor a polyadenylated tail [11, 12]. CircRNAs often have a high stability and are less susceptible to degradation as the loop structure is resistant to RNase R and RNA exonuclease [13].…”
