Roles of ethylene glycol solvent and polymers in preparing uniformly distributed MgO nanoparticles

Abstract: This study focus on specifying the roles of solvent ethylene glycol (EG) and polymers for synthesis of uniformly distributed magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles with average crystallite size of around 50 nm through a modified polyol method. Based on different characterization results, it was concluded that, Mg 2+ ions was precipitated by the −OH and CO 3 2− ions decomposed from urea in ethylene glycol (EG) medium (CO(NH 2) 2 → NH 3 + HNCO, HNCO + H 2 O → NH 3 + CO 2), thus forming well crystallized Mg 5 (CO 3)… Show more

“…e DSC curve has one endothermic peak at 660°C where maximum weight loss occurs which implies phase transition of Mg (OH) 2 to MgO. Hence, the pure MgO nanoparticles have obtained with pure phase at 700°C and the obtained results are well consistent with previous reports [79,[81][82][83][84][85][86][87].…”

“…Thus, most likely PEG is highly dispersed inside the mesopores in the case of PEG/Mg(OH) 2 , while in the case of PEG/MgO it is not. Hu et al also claim that PEG-6000 has no significant influence on the crystal structure, morphology, and size uniformity of MgO nanoparticles [42,43].…”

“…The high degree of entanglement that formed a three-dimensional network might be attributed to the crosslinking between hydroxyl group of PVA and hydroxyl and carboxyl group in the outer layer of the MWCNT 23 . In addition, the Ni and Co bimetallic nanoparticles were uniformly distributed throughout the aerogel matrix, mainly due to the good stabilizing and dispersing properties of ethylene glycol 24 . The uniform distribution of Ni/Co was also evidenced by EDX elemental mappings as shown in Fig.…”
