Romantic Surfaces: A Systematic Overview of Stable, Biospecific, and Antifouling Zwitterionic Surfaces

Abstract: This Feature Article focuses on recent advances in the bioconjugation of surface-bound zwitterionic polymers for biospecific antifouling surfaces. Various approaches for the functionalization of antifouling zwitterionic polymers are systematically investigated, such as chain-end and side-chain functionalization. Side-chain functionalization methods can be further classified as those that are achieved through homopolymerization of custom-synthesized zwitterionic monomers equipped with reactive groups, or those … Show more

“…A good bioactive antifouling layer balances two objectives, namely, maximizing immobilization of bioreceptors and minimizing the nonspecific adsorption of proteins . However, a significant amount of immobilized bioreceptors itself increases the nonspecific adsorption of proteins, due to fouling nature of bioreceptors on their own, as well as due to the changes in antifouling brush structure .…”

“…Therefore, grafting hydrogels as coatings on various substrates can provide required characteristics and maintain the supporting strength of substrates. Among these hydrogels, zwitterionic polymers or polyampholytes [19,22,24], show good antifouling properties due to charge balance and strong hydration of the ionized groups [25]. As a consequence, the lack of early electrostatic attraction between surfaces and proteins will lead to lower adsorption in the end.…”

“…Zwitterionic materials have an important role in antifouling applications for their high fouling resistance [19] and long-term stability [22,24]. The growing interest in zwitterionic materials for antifouling purposes [60,61] has stimulated work both on zwitterionic SAMs [62,63] and polymers [64].…”
