ROP Optimization and Modeling in Directional Drilling Process

Abstract: Drilling optimization is an engineering strategy to drill wells more productively and efficiently. Specific objectives of directional drilling are good hole quality, firm directional control, high angle-build capacity, maximal durability, optimal rate of penetration (ROP) and low non-productive time (NPT). This can be achieved through a perfect combination of well design, mathematical drilling models, drilling data analysis, and applications of new and high techniques. High ROP in safe and stabl… Show more

“…The prediction of ROP has been extensively investigated in the petroleum industry, and two primary frameworks have been utilized: physics-based models and intelligent models. Physics-based models, including the Maurer model [2], the Galle model [3], the Bourgoyne-Young model [4], the Walker model [5], the Hareland model [6], the Detournay model [7] and the Wiktorski model [8], also known as analytical models, attempt to formulate the relationship between the ROP and influencing factors through mechanism analyses. These models have been developed over several decades, incorporating theoretical analysis, laboratory experiments and field observations.…”

“…Downhole mud motors and bent subs have been used for many years, since they are effective, reliable and a cheap solution of creating a deviated well. The drill string is oriented in a toolface direction and only the drill bit is rotated due to the hydraulic power of the mud motor, located several meters behind the bit, while the rest of the drill string stays without rotation Wiktorski et al (2017). One of the main drawbacks of mud motors is the necessity of stop the rotation of the drill string once the toolface is pointed to the desired direction.…”
