Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass versus Sleeve Gastrectomy as Revisional Procedure after Adjustable Gastric Band: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract: We aim to review the available literature on obese patients treated with laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) or laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) after failed laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB), in order to compare the clinical outcomes of the two methods. A systematic literature search was performed in PubMed, CENTRAL, and Scopus databases, in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. Eight studies met the inclusion criteria incorporating 635 patients. Both procedures are associated wit… Show more

“…Therefore, bariatric surgery will be a better treatment option for morbidly obese subjects or obesity with comorbidities. Previous studies have proven that bariatric surgery is effective in reducing body weight and improving glucose-lipid metabolism in obese patients [4][5][6][7]. Retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) is mainly released by the human liver and adipose tissue [8].…”

“…This is an archaic differentiation that does not take into account the current insights in the working mechanism of these complex metabolic surgeries [ 11 ]. For most bariatric surgery experts, LAGB is no longer considered as one of the gold standard bariatric interventions, since one out of three patients develops band erosions, and almost 50% of patients require band removal [ 10 , 100 ]. On the other hand, SG has proven to have metabolic effects that go well beyond the effect of restriction [ 101 , 102 ].…”
