RSSI-Aware Energy Saving For Large File Downloading on Smartphones

Abstract: Smartphones are emerging as a particularly appealing platform for network applications, especially through the WiFi interface. However, WiFi entails considerable energy consumption and smartphones are bottlenecked by their battery capacity. Finding ways to reduce energy consumption of WiFi is more than critical. In this letter, we address the problem of WiFi energy management with the awareness of RSSI properties. Through experiments, we first investigate how the RSSI influences energy consumption. Based on th… Show more

“…Mobile devices are equipped with RSS functionality. Hence, applications, such as user indoor positioning and navigation [24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31] and battery resource management [32], have emerged. In [24], the localization accuracy based on RSS was improved by using a priori information obtained from measurements.…”

“…The traditional indoor positioning algorithms are mainly based on time of arrival (TOA) ranging [6], time difference of arrival (TDOA) ranging [7], received signal strength indicator (RSSI) ranging [8], angle of arrival (AOA) ranging [9], fingerprint matching [10], etc. In 2017, Yang et al proposed a KFL-TOA indoor positioning method based on ultra-wideband (UWB) for the positioning problem in complex indoor environments.…”

“…There is an increasing demand for low power consumption, attracting extensive attention from research workers and experts from different fields [1] [2] [3]. In the opinion of power management [4] [5], power consumption is under control by two main techniques: Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS), and Suspend/Resume (or sleep/active) technique. DVFS technique is a hardware-based and powerefficient mechanism which makes dynamic adjustment in processor implementation voltage to decrease the power consumption.…”
