SUMMARY A standardised test for lip‐reading ability was given to 47 girls in a school for the hearing impaired in order to determine any connection between lip‐reading ability and intellectual function, visual acuity, perceptual ability, retinitis or other handicap. All cases were deaf at birth as the result of maternal rubella; in the majority of cases infection occurred within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. The only factor which appeared to have a slight association with lip‐reading ability was the degree of rubella retinitis in the younger children. An attempt was also made to relate the time during pregnancy of rubella infection to the severity of hearing loss, retinitis or other handicap. The only mildly significant relationships found were that if the infection was early there was a greater risk of severe retinitis and a lesser risk of severe language disorder appearing in the child. RÉSUMÉ Etude du hancicap chez de jeunes sourdes par rubeole et de leurs effets sur la lecture sur les lèvres Un test standardisé de lecture sur les lèvres a été donnéà 47 filles dans une école pout sourds dans le but de rechercher une relation entre l'aptitude à lire sur les lèvres d'une parr et l'intelligence, l'acuité visuelle, la capacité perceptive, la présence d'une rétinite ou autre handicap d'autre part. Toutes les fillettes étaient sourdes de naissance à la suite d'une rubéole maternelle; dans la majorité des cas, l'infestation était survenue dans les 12 premières semaines de la grossesse. Le seul facteur paraissant relié significativement à la lecture sur les lèvres était le degré de rétinite rubéoleuse chez les plus jeunes enfants. Une tentative a été faite de relier le moment de l'infestation rubéoleuse à la gravité de la perte auditive, la rétinite ou un autre handicap. La seule relation faiblement significative observeé est qu'une infestation précoce accroit le risque de rétinite grave et diminue celui d'un trouble sévère du langage apparaissant chez l'enfant. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Eine Studie über die Beeinträchtigungen von Röteln‐tauben Mädchen und ihre Fähigkeiten im Erfassen der Lippensprache Ein standardisierter Test für die Fähigkeit, von den Lippen abzulesen, wurde 47 Mädchen in einer Schule für hörbehinderte Kinder vorgelegt, um Zusammenhange zwischen der Fahigkeit, von den Lippen abzulesen und der intellektuellen Leistung, der Genauigkeit im Sehen, der perceptuellen Fähigkeit, einer Retinitis oder anderen Behinderungen zu er‐mitteln. Alle Fälle waren von Geburt an taub nach einer mütterlichen Erkrankung an Röteln; in der Mehrzahl der Fälle war die Infektion während der ersten 12 Wochen der Schwangerschaft aufgetreten. Der einzige Faktor, der anscheinend eine klare Verbindung zur Fähigkeit, von den Lippen abzulesen, aufwies, war das Ausmaß der Röteln‐Retinitis bei jüngeren Kindern. Es wurde auch ein Verusch unternommen, die Zeit der Röteln‐Infektion mit dem Ausmaß des Gehörsverlustes, der Retinitis oder anderen Schädigungen zu vergleichen.
