Rupture of a Dissecting Aortic Aneurysm into the left pulmonary artery in a Horse

Abstract: SUMMARY The paper describes a case of dissecting aortic aneurysm which had ruptured into the left pulmonary artery. The horse presented with atrial fibrillation and peripheral oedema. The condition is compared with reports of a similar syndrome in man. ZUSAMMENFAS… Show more

“…Aortic rupture at the location of the aortic arch, near the ligamentum arteriosum in combination with fistulation towards the pulmonary artery is less common than aortic root rupture (Fig ). The condition has been described in three young Warmblood horses aged 3–4 years , all other reported cases have been in Friesians. Rupture, sometimes with dissection of aortic aneurysm extending along the ascending aortic arch occurs with or without the development of periaortic haematoma or transverse rupture in the pulmonary trunk .…”

Rupture, sometimes with dissection of aortic aneurysm extending along the ascending aortic arch occurs with or without the development of periaortic haematoma or transverse rupture in the pulmonary trunk . Friesian horses consistently develop transverse rupture near the ligamentum arteriosum and, in the majority, there is aortopulmonary fistulation with pseudoaneurysm, a blood‐filled cavity lined by endothelium and supported by granulation tissue originating from the area of rupture.…”

“…In horses, aortic aneurysm, which is dissection and rupture or fistula of the aorta into a cardiac chamber or vessel, also referred to as aortic root disease, has been reported more frequently. [8][9][10][11][12] Aortic root disease has been described more frequently in stallions and geldings.…”
