Rural and Urban Suicide in South Korea

Abstract: Suicide rates in 2005 in South Korea were higher in rural areas than in urban areas. Those in rural areas more often used pesticides and chemicals as a method for suicide, and there was a greater proportion of men and the elderly, both groups at higher risk for suicide in South Korea. These three factors may account for the high rural suicide rate in South Korea.

“…In urban areas, methods including jumping, poisoning and hanging are more common. 223 Pesticide poisoning are more common in some rural areas, including in Taiwan 218 and South Korea, 222 with some evidence that hangings showed least geographic differences. 218 These distinct geographic patterns of suicide methods appears to be driven by the ready availability of method, 210 although may also be shaped by cultural norms, localised patters (i.e.…”

“…It is also roughly double that of the younger population in Korea (24.3 per 100,000) [1], and is now regarded as a major social issue. In Korea, suicide rates are higher in rural areas than in urban regions [4], which might be due to the large numbers of elderly people living in rural areas. Suicide prevention strategies tailored by age and residential area are needed; however, only a few trials have examined this issue in older adults living in rural areas [5].…”

“…Geographical differences in suicide mortality according to district-level socioeconomic status have recently been an important research concern (Khang et al 2005;Kim et al 2010;Hong and Knapp 2013;Lee et al 2014). Rural-urban differences in suicide have also been presented (Kim et al 2010;Cheong et al 2012;Park and Lester 2012).…”
